‘Our best game’: Rangers win third in a row in 4–1 defeat of Angels
ARLINGTON — With a combination of aggressive baserunning and solid work from four different pitchers, the Texas Rangers were able to secure a 4–1 win and claim victory in their third straight outing, this time against the red-hot Los Angeles Angels.
“I think that was probably our best game all year,” said Rangers manager Chris Woodward. “Just execution-wise, the way we played the game, guys just looked relaxed. … We didn’t score 15 runs, but we got the guy over when we needed to and brought the guy in when we needed to.”
Curtis Terry led the way for Texas, going 2–3 on the evening with a run scored. Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Brock Holt each tallied an RBI.
As for pitching, “the execution was phenomenal,” Woodward said. “Getting Jimmy [Herget] up here, seeing him get six-up six-down, Dane [Dunning] … was a little bit under the weather, but battled through five innings. … It was fun to watch.”
Dunning — who allowed 3 hits and a lone run in the fourth inning — picks up the win to move to 5–7 on the season. Joe Barlow and Spencer Patton also made relief appearances, each on the mound for a single inning.
“We need to see [this effort] every night. If we do, we’ll give ourselves a chance,” said Woodward. Phil Gosselin scored the night’s only run for the Angels. Juan Lagares recorded an RBI. Shohei Ohtani went 0–4 in the outing.
The Rangers are now on a three-game winning streak after losing 15 in a row. With a record of 39–67, the team sits 25 games behind the division-leading Houston Astros.
Texas is back in action Tuesday night for the second matchup of a four-game series with the Angels at Globe Life Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
